Purpose of Pre-Surgical Evaluations
Preparing for surgery with clarity and confidence
Pre-surgical evaluations provide essential neuropsychological insight specifically for cochlear implant candidates, supporting optimal outcomes, and informing postoperative care. These evaluations help determine readiness for surgery, anticipate potential benefits, and identify supports that may be needed during recovery and rehabilitation.
Dr. Jennifer Linton Reesman is a board-certified Clinical Neuropsychologist with specialized expertise in pediatric and adult neurodevelopment. She has extensive experience working closely with cochlear implant teams, including audiologists and ENT specialists, to ensure evaluations are thorough, objective, and tailored to the unique needs of implant candidates.
Her pre-surgical evaluations focus on:
Assessing baseline cognitive, language, and developmental functioning relevant to cochlear implantation
Identifying strengths and areas where support may optimize post-surgical outcomes
Informing surgical decision-making and individualized care planning
Providing families with guidance on postoperative expectations, strategies, and follow-up supports
By centering her evaluations on cochlear implant candidates, Dr. Reesman helps families and clinical teams make informed decisions and plan effectively for the best possible outcomes.
Collaboration and Support
Evaluation Process
Pre-surgical evaluations begin with a thorough review of medical records, audiology reports, and developmental or educational histories. Referrals usually come from audiologists or ENT specialists, ensuring close coordination across the care team.
The evaluation includes age-appropriate neuropsychological testing, language and communication assessments, and structured observations. For children, caregivers provide detailed developmental information, while adults participate directly in assessment activities. All testing is conducted in a supportive, patient-centered manner, designed to be engaging, minimize stress, and yield accurate, reliable results.
Following the assessment, a comprehensive written report is provided. The report summarizes findings, interprets cognitive and functional profiles, and offers practical recommendations for both pre- and post-surgical care. It is crafted to be clear, clinically sound, and useful for families, surgical teams, and other professionals involved in care.
A feedback session is scheduled to review the results and provide guidance for postoperative strategies. Dr. Reesman emphasizes timely communication, typically delivering results within about two weeks, so families and clinical teams can make informed decisions and implement supports without delay.
Collaboration is central to the process. Families, surgical teams, audiologists, and other healthcare providers work together to ensure evaluations not only inform surgical decisions but also help children and adults receive the guidance and resources needed for successful outcomes after surgery.
Email is the preferred method for initial contact, allowing the team to gather relevant information and plan the evaluation efficiently.
By providing clarity, reassurance, and expert guidance, pre-surgical neuropsychological evaluations help families and healthcare providers approach surgery with confidence and a clear plan for care before and after the procedure.
