Understanding Neuropsychology

Neuropsychology is the study of how the brain supports thinking, learning, behavior, and emotional functioning. Neuropsychologists like Dr. Jennifer Linton Reesman use evidence-based methods to understand cognitive, developmental, and emotional functioning across the lifespan, helping patients, families, and professionals recognize strengths, address challenges, and identify opportunities for support.

Dr. Reesman works with a wide range of individuals, from young children to older adults, and partners closely with families, educators, healthcare providers, and legal professionals. Her evaluations provide objective, comprehensive information that guides decision-making, educational planning, and clinical care.

Her work spans many areas of cognitive and developmental functioning, including attention, learning, memory, executive skills, social-emotional functioning, and neurodevelopmental conditions. People are often referred for evaluation when concerns arise such as:

  • Attention‑deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)

  • Learning differences, including dyslexia and dysgraphia

  • Autism spectrum conditions

  • Traumatic brain injury, concussion, or other acquired brain injuries

  • Developmental delays and cognitive differences

  • Complex medical or neurological conditions affecting thinking, memory, or daily functioning

Through careful assessment and thoughtful interpretation, Dr. Reesman helps individuals and their support teams make informed, practical decisions that support growth, learning, and everyday success.

Why Neuropsychology Matters

Neuropsychological evaluation bridges the gap between brain function and daily life. By understanding how the brain supports learning, memory, attention, and behavior, families and professionals can implement interventions, accommodations, and strategies that promote success and well-being. Whether the goal is understanding a child’s learning profile, clarifying adult cognitive changes, or supporting medical or legal decisions, neuropsychology provides the expertise and insight needed to make informed, confident choices.

Process & benefits

Typical Evaluation Process

A comprehensive neuropsychological evaluation provides:

  • Clarity and understanding of an individual’s cognitive strengths and challenges

  • Practical recommendations for school, home, or work supports

  • Guidance for medical or surgical decisions when cognitive or developmental functioning is a factor

  • Reliable documentation for legal, educational, or healthcare purposes

  • Timely results with actionable feedback, helping families and professionals implement supports quickly

Evaluations begin with a detailed review of developmental, medical, and educational history. Standardized tests are administered to measure cognitive, learning, and behavioral functioning, often supplemented by questionnaires and collateral information from parents, teachers, or other providers.

Results are provided in both a written report and a feedback session, where findings are explained clearly, recommendations are reviewed, and questions are addressed. Reports are designed to be practical, objective, and understandable for families, schools, medical teams, and referral sources.
